Are You Seeking More Meaning & Purpose Through Work?

I'm Jessie!

I'm a former big law attorney turned executive & career coach for lawyers. In this blog, I share tips and insights to help lawyers succeed without burnout and align their careers with their authentic selves and thrive.

hey there

Are you a lawyer who longs for a deeper sense of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment in your work?

Do you ever feel like the only thing you get in exchange for spending most of your waking hours working is a paycheck–and that’s no longer enough?

Were you led to believe that a paycheck should be enough?

One of my clients said her dad told her, “They call it ‘work’ for a reason. If you enjoy 10% of your job, consider yourself lucky.”

If that doesn’t sit right with you, it’s for a reason.

You have gifts inside you that can serve the world. We are all capable of contributing goodness, truth, and beauty to the world through our work. There are countless ways to do this, including through practicing law.

When your work enables you to use your gifts in a way that feels meaningful to you, your work becomes a source of deep purpose and fulfillment.

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” — Pablo Picasso

Recently, I thought of some of the former lawyers who, at some point in their career, chose to pivot to fully embody their gifts.

  • As I sweated through a Peloton ride, feeling strong in my menopausal body, I thought, “What if Robin Arzón never became a Peloton instructor?”
  • As I wept for joy at Danielle Ponder’s performance of “Be Gentle,” I thought, “What if she never became a musician?”
  • As I felt inspired reading Robin Sharma and Gretchen Rubin, I thought, “What if they never became authors?”
  • As I contemplated mortality and learned to support others at the end of life by training with Alua Arthur, I thought, “What if she never became a death doula?”
  • As I laughed listening to Mel Robbins, I thought, “What if she never became a podcast host?”

For many of you, law may be a great fit, a career that allows you to be of service in a way that feels meaningful.

For others, it may not be.

If you sense your current job may be out of alignment with your gifts and what matters to you, I invite you to check out my Career Alignment Map for lawyers.

In your corner,

Jessie
