Lawyers, have you ever wondered how to find more meaning in your work?

We spend most of our waking hours working. When our work doesn’t align with who we truly are—or fails to offer us a sense of meaning or purpose—it can take a toll on our energy, motivation, health, wellbeing, and sense of life satisfaction.

The good news? We can design our careers to experience more meaning in our work.

Researchers from UC Berkeley have identified several key areas that give people a sense of meaning at work. It’s not about checking every box—but noticing where your current role aligns (or doesn’t) can spark insights:

  1. Your work makes a positive contribution to something greater than yourself.
  2. Your work allows you to explore topics that are meaningful or interesting to you.
  3. You’re growing and developing mastery in skills that matter to you.
  4. You feel a sense of community at work.
  5. Your contributions are heard and considered by decision-makers.
  6. You have autonomy to do your work in a way that suits you.
