Many lawyers hear the word manifestation and cringe.
It sounds like wishful thinking. Like putting a vision board on your wall and waiting for the universe to deliver.
What if neuroscience can explain how we leverage the power of our brains to create the careers and lives we deeply desire?

The Science Behind Manifestation and Visualization
The late neurosurgeon and neuroscientist Dr. James Doty studied what happens in the brain when we hold a clear vision of what we want. What he found challenges the idea that setting intentions is passive or naive.
Here’s the key: our brains are exposed to over 10 million bits of data per second. Only 50 bits make it through to our conscious awareness. Our brain is constantly filtering.
This is one of the reasons we see reality not as it is, but as we are. Each of us has unique perceptual filters based on our life experiences, social and cultural conditioning, beliefs, and what we choose to focus on.
When we’re chronically stressed, those 50 bits that make it through to our awareness are almost entirely devoted to keeping us safe. We’re scanning for threats, not opportunities.
But when we repeatedly visualize a clear, compelling future, and we feel it emotionally, something shifts. Our brain begins to recognize what we’re visualizing as familiar. And it starts scanning the environment for opportunities to help bring that vision into reality.

The Formula That I Teach
In my signature workshop on the neuroscience of manifestation, I walk people through a process I think of as planting a tree:
Prepare the soil. Calm your nervous system and busy mind. Create the stillness and spaciousness to hear the subtle voice of your inner wisdom over the loud noise of fear and the external world.
Choose your seeds. Get clear on what you actually want. Not what your parents want, not what looks impressive on paper, but what genuinely matters to you. What you long for. What makes you come alive.
Pull the weeds. Our limiting beliefs, the ones we absorbed in childhood, from our culture, from the messages we received about who we are and what we’re capable of, will choke any vision we try to grow. We can choose to bring them into the light, examine them, and decide whether they still serve us.
Are your thoughts and beliefs supporting you in bringing your vision into reality?
Plant and nurture. Embed your vision into your subconscious through repeated visualization paired with genuine emotion. Regularly view your vision board or read your list of intentions. Update them as you and your desires evolve.
Feel gratitude before your vision becomes your reality. See in your mind’s eye the smiling faces of those you serve in your new job. See the beauty of the natural light filtering through the windows in your dream office. Smell the salty ocean air on your vacation. Feel the sense of accomplishment at delivering your big presentation with confidence and ease.
Let go of the outcome. Trust that what you’re working toward, or something even better, is on its way.

Why So Many High Achievers Get Stuck
I’ve worked with lawyers and other professionals who are extraordinarily accomplished yet unfulfilled. They’ve done everything right. And yet they feel like they’re living someone else’s life.
Often, the missing piece isn’t strategy or discipline. It’s belief.
A Roman historian named Tacitus once wrote: “The desire for safety stands against every great and noble enterprise.”
When we truly believe that what we want is possible for us, our brain begins working on our behalf. We notice opportunities we would have otherwise missed. Doors open. We meet the right people at the right time. I’ve experienced this many times and so have my friends and clients.
But when we’re operating from fear, self-doubt, or old stories about what we’re capable of or what’s “practical,” our brain filters out possibility before we ever see it.

A Question to Sit With
Take a moment to imagine your life a year from now. Not the life that’s expected of you. Not the safe choice.
The life you actually want.
What do you see? How does it feel? And what beliefs might be standing between where you are now and that vision?
What would you need to believe about yourself and what’s possible to be motivated enough to take the consistent action necessary to bring your vision into reality?
